- Aung San Suu Kyi, the founder of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma (Myanmar) and the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner, leads the Burmese pro-democracy movement. Suu Kyi became an internationally renowned democracy activist when the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), the ruling military junta in Burma, refused to relinquish power to Suu Kyi and the NLD after it won 82% of the vote in the 1990 parliamentary elections.
