- From its beginnings in the early seventeenth century, until the second quarter of the twentieth century, the workhouse was one of the primary forms of publicly funded relief available to the destitute of Britain. Following the establishment of a national workhouse system through the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, the workhouse gained a fearsome reputation. [Source: Encyclopedia of Homelessness; Workhouses]
