- William Howard Taft (1857–1930), 27th president of the United States, is the only American to serve both as president and as chief justice of the Supreme Court. He graduated second in his class at Yale University in 1878 and was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1880 after graduating from Cincinnati Law School.
