- POPULAR FRONTS ARE ALLIANCES or coalitions that were formed primarily to counter the rise of fascism, and as such, are particularly associated with 1930s Europe, although a Popular Front government was elected in Chile in 1938. A popular front was also formed in Estonia in 1988 to campaign for independence from the Soviet Union.
