- John Caldwell Calhoun (1782–1850) was one of the most prominent United States politicians prior to the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861. Calhoun served as state representative, U.S. representative, U.S. secretary of state, U.S. secretary of war, U.S. vice president under President Andrew Jackson, and U.S. senator from South Carolina.
