- Technology employed to mitigate against the damaging effects of large ground accelerations on human activities and structures during an earthquake. Steps that can be taken to minimise damage include the following: structural design to prevent resonance with ground shaking or to sway with ground motion; reinforcement of masonry to prevent collapse; the preparation of reliable seismic hazard maps and appropriate planning regulation.
