punishment within prison

Definición

  • For the general public, the punishment portion of the American criminal justice system is defined by prison: criminals, because of their guilt, are isolated from the larger society in prisons; their punishment is to remain separate until their sentence has been served. Society, however, does not end at the prison gates; even within the walls, prison officials have historically used systems of punishment and reward to maintain order, enforce rules of conduct, and deter further criminality within prison societies.
