- Geographies of genocide refers to (1) the study of genocide and mass violence within the broad framework of geography as a discipline and (2) the places created and transformed, real or imagined, as a consequence of genocide and other forms of mass violence. Geographies of Genocide as a Field of Study Genocide, literally meaning “race murder,” was coined by Raphael Lemkin during his lifelong struggle to garner international support against mass extermination.
