- In Les Misérables, the novel by Victor Hugo, we are introduced to a concept of redemption and play that represents one of the most poignant descriptions of a theology of play. An escaped convict, Jean Valjean, closes in on the French village of Montfermeil, nearing the end of his mission to redeem the daughter of his deceased employee, Fantine.
