Freedmen's Bureau
Definición
- When it was established in March 1865, the Freedmen's Bureau represented a bold attempt to assist the former slaves and promote equality in the postwar South. During its existence, the agency (officially called the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands) took on a multitude of responsibilities, including the oversight of contracts between planters and former slaves, the administration of special courts to protect the rights of the freedmen, and the establishment of schools and other social welfare services for both blacks and whites.
