Definición
- Throughout the mid- to late 1950s and during the early stages of the civil rights movement, citizenship schools were developed in rural and urban areas across the U.S. South. Citizenship schools taught literacy skills to African Americans; the schools' primary goal was to assist African Americans in passing unmerited voter registration requirements.
