  • The “Weimar” Republic era ran from the end of World War I through the Nazis' ascent to power in 1933. Its years were marked by the collapse of the rigidly reactionary Imperial Monarchy and the emergence of republican democracy, social chaos and near revolution in 19181919, the vindictive Versailles Treaty powers' dictates over the following decade, an extreme-rightist coup attempt in 1920, the disastrous hyper-inflation of 1923, the crippling impact of the Depression, and the rise of the Nazisas well as an intensely creative and progressive cultural scene, especially in the capital Berlin, then a city of 4 million.
