- The Drivers Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), Public Law 103–322, was enacted to protect the privacy of personal information held by state Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs). As stipulated under the DPPA, DMVs are prohibited from releasing personal information found within driver motor vehicle records—information that is protected against unreasonable searches and seizures under the Fourth Amendment.
