- Over the last 25 years, the number of Americans diagnosed with the progressive brain degeneration of Alzheimer's disease has more than doubled, reaching 4.5 million in 2006. According to current estimates, by 2050, as the baby boomer generation ages, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's will have climbed to between 11.3 and 16 million.
