- A document management system (DMS) provides a secure electronic environment for management, control, and distribution of electronic documents. The fundamental purpose of DMS, digital library technology, or the World Wide Web is to organize, keep track of, and efficiently retrieve documents produced by individuals, workgroups, or enterprises.
