- Although basic computation devices have a long history, the global impact of computing became widespread in the late 20th century after the development of personal computers, networking, and the Internet. An estimated 1.7 billion people or 26% of the global population had Internet access by 2009 according to the UN agency International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
