- The organized women's suffrage movement, originating in the middle of the 19th century and culminating in successes during and immediately after World War I, struggled for the right of women to vote. The suffrage movement's origins, as well as its various ideologies and practical strategies to gain the franchise, took different shapes according to the specific pressures and historical forces of its various local and national contexts.
