- John Hope Franklin, often referred to as the dean of American historians, was the James B. Duke Emeritus Professor of History at Duke University. In his nearly 70 years of work as an educator, he wrote and edited 18 books, received numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest civilian honor) in 1995, and had been awarded over 130 honorary degrees from colleges and universities across the globe.
