- The Zapatista National Liberation Army (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, or EZLN) is an armed organization that was created in 1984 by Indigenous peoples from the Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Chol, Tojolabal, and Mame ethnic groups in the southeastern state of Chiapas, México. On January 1, 1994, the EZLN initiated armed struggle against the México government and made its cause a public matter. [Source: Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media; Zapatista Media]
