- The oldest existing African cultural institution in America, the Karamu House, is located in the heart of the African American community in Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1915 by Russell and Rowena Jelliffe and known as the Neighborhood Association Settlement House until 1939, when it was renamed the Karamu House.
