  • The public peril exception is a key exception to the knock and announce rule, which requires police officers to identify themselves, give notice of their purpose, and request entry before forcibly entering a dwelling. The knock and announce rule has existed since the early common law and is considered part of the reasonableness requirement of the Fourth Amendment.
