  • Sir Edward Coke (1552–1634) is considered to have been the greatest jurist in England during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. He held positions as a barrister, member of Parliament, solicitor general, Speaker of the House of Commons, attorney general, chief justice of the Common Pleas, and chief justice of the King's Bench. He was the author of the Petition of Right (1628), one of the three most important documents in English legal history, and the Reports and Institutes of the Laws of England.
