- The term online social movements refers to the adoption and use by social movements and community activists of new information and communications technologies (ICTs), such as the Internet and World Wide Web. Social movements may be described as informal networks of people and groups who share a common identity and are capable of mobilizing resources for protest on issues of conflict.
