sanctuary
Définition
- The concept of sanctuary originated thirty-five hundred years ago when Yahweh (God) commanded the prophet Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt, to set aside cities and places of refuge (sanctuary) in Canaan, the “Promised Land,” where the persecuted could seek asylum from “blood-avengers.” Judeo-Christian faith was born in the travail of escape. Yahweh liberated the Israelites, or Hebrews, from the bondage of the Egyptian pharaoh’s dictatorship. [Source: Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion; Sanctuary]
