- From antiquity through the Scientific Revolution, a major controversy was whether extension can exist without body. Although this is sometimes still debated, the original Problemstellung has been eclipsed in three respects: first, by the emergence of the field concept in physics; second, by the assimilation of space into space-time; and third, by the geometrization of gravity in the general theory of relativity.
