- The term time value of money refers to the concepts and calculations behind the simple observation that a dollar to be received in one year, or at some arbitrary time in the future, is worth less than a dollar to be received today. Mortgage payments for physician offices, interest expense on equipment loans, and investment annuities are all examples of time value of money calculations.
