Concept information
Terme préférentiel
sanctions and embargoes
Définition
- The terms sanctions and embargo describe two particular kinds of economic penalties applied from one country (or a group of countries) on another one with a double purpose: to punish the latter by depriving it of essential goods and to force it to conform to the will of the former. Although they represent two different forms of economic coercion, these concepts are currently considered almost synonymous. [Source: The Encyclopedia of Political Science; Sanctions and Embargoes]
