  • African American Vernacular English (AAVE) has been known by a variety of names: ebonics; black English; African American Language (AAL), also called African American English; black vernacular; black English vernacular (BEV); black vernacular English (BVE); or nonstandard Negro dialect, to name a few. Whatever it is called, studies have estimated that in the late 1960s to early 1970s over 80 percent of Americans of African descent spoke some variety of black English.
