  • The S&P 500 Index or the Standard & Poor's 500 Stocks Composite Index is a market value-weighted index of 500 leading U.S. large market capitalization or large cap stocks. The S&P 500 Index is widely regarded as the principal indicator of overall stock market activity in the United States and commonly serves as a proxy for the entire U.S. equity market.
