  • Winfield Scott (1786–1866) was one of the most distinguished American soldiers of the nineteenth century. Scott's greatest professional triumph occurred in the United States–Mexican War (1846–1848), during which he conducted a skillful campaign that ended with the fall of Mexico City in 1847.
