human rights policing

Définition

  • DefinitionAt its most basic level, ‘human rights policing’ refers to policing strategies, policies and practices that are supportive of, and in compliance with, international human rights principles and standards. However, conceptual and definitional difficulties abound and it is often used synonymously with ‘democratic policing’ in the police studies literature.Distinctive FeaturesDuring the past two decades the concept of ‘human rights’ has come to occupy an increasingly visible space as the mainstay of democratic governance, enshrined in a myriad of constitutional protections or national legislation such as the UK's Human Rights’ Act, the Canadian Charter of Rights’ and Freedoms and so forth.
