  • With the lowering of the flag of the United Nations Transitional Administration (UNTAET) on 20 May 2002, the Indonesian island of East Timor (Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste) gained its independence after twenty-five years of political and military struggle against its occupier. It is no accident that the group of East Timorese who accepted the transfer of power from U.N. stewardship were also members of the group that created the first pro-independence party in 1974.
