- The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), a private, nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., works to improve communication through better understanding of language and culture. To advance this mission, CAL has made contributions to the fields of bilingual, English as a second language, literacy, and foreign-language education; workforce development; dialect studies; language assessment; language policy; refugee orientation; international development; and the education of linguistically and culturally diverse adults and children around the world.
