Définition

  • In Wyman v. James (1971), a case that has not been overruled, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the government could suspend payments to a mother receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) if the mother refused to submit to home visits by a caseworker. The Court's decision, authored by Justice Harry Blackmun, offered eleven different rationales for its ruling, most centering on the state's concern for the protection of children and the noncriminal nature of the visits.
