- Rationality is a disputed concept in the social sciences that has been used in different ways in discussions of power, interests, freedom, and related concepts. In this entry, rationality will be discussed in two guises: first, instrumental rationality, as used in rational choice theory; second, substantive rationality, as used in continental philosophy.
