hydrate
Definition
- In chemistry, a hydrate is a substance that contains water or its constituent elements. The chemical state of the water varies widely between different classes of hydrates, some of which were so labeled before their chemical structure was understood. Natural gas hydrate is a mineral that occurs in marine and terrestrial environments in which hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon gases are held by hydrogen bonding within rigid cages of water molecules. The total volume of methane held in gas hydrate represents a significant global reservoir of reduced carbon (Kvenvolden, 1988), leading to the suggestion that gas hydrate could serve as a future energy resource as conventional energy sources are depleted (Collett & Kuuskraa, 1998).
