volcano

Definition

  • A volcano is a geological structure that results from the rise of magma and the subsequent eruption of material (gas and lava) from this magma, on the surface of the earth's crust or another body of water. It may be airborne or underwater. Depending on the nature of the material, the type of eruption, the frequency of eruption and the orogeny, volcanoes take on various forms, the most typical being that of a conical mountain crowned by a crater or a caldera. Volcanoes are often complex edifices that have been built up by a succession of eruptions and, in the same period, have been partially demolished by explosion, erosion or collapse.
