Preferred term

growth ring

Definition

  • In botany, a ring, or annual ring, or growth ring, is a concentric circle on the cross-section of the trunk of a tree, formed each year by the cambium, visible by the difference in colouring between the summer wood (also called latewood) and the spring wood (also called earlywood). The roots, and the stems when they are perennial, of certain herbaceous plants such as dicots, also have growth rings. (Adapted and translated from: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerne_(botanique))
