food web
Definition
- A food web is a set of interconnected food chains within an ecosystem through which energy and biomass circulate (exchange of elements such as carbon and nitrogen flow between different levels of the food chain, exchange of carbon between autotrophic and heterotrophic plants). For example, a trophic relationship is the link between predator and prey in an ecosystem. The structure of food webs (the types and networks of food relationships between organisms) strongly influences the quantity, diversity, stability and quality of biomass and residual organic matter (excreta, necromass) produced by ecosystems. The quality of a food web and its interactions is directly related to the stability and resilience of the populations within it. They are affected by global changes, including those linked to climate change, including at the level of key species.
