- Coccoliths are individual plates of calcium carbonate formed by coccolithophores (single-celled algae such as Emiliania huxleyi) which are arranged around them in a coccosphere. Coccoliths are are the main constituent of chalk deposits. (Adapted from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccolith)
