Preferred term

forest

Definition

  • A forest is a relatively large area of woodland consisting of one or more stands of trees, shrubs and bushes (fruticae), and other associated native plants. There are many definitions of the term "forest" depending on latitude and usage. A small area of woodland is called a wood, a grove or a copse depending on its size. Various types of forests exist; from primary forests to so-called urban forests, with intermediate gradients. Forests at different latitudes and altitudes, with different precipitation and evapotranspiration, form distinct biomes : boreal forests around the North Pole, tropical rainforests and tropical dry forests around the equator, and temperate forests in the middle latitudes. Areas at higher altitudes tend to have similar forests to those at higher latitudes, and the amount of precipitation also affects forest composition.
