podocarp
Definition
- Podocarp is a vast genus of conifers comprising around a hundred species of evergreen trees or shrubs in the Podocarpaceae family, with a cosmopolitan distribution (with the exception of North America, Europe and Antarctica), They are characterized by their foliage, which is sometimes herbaceous (long and almost filiform) or may have a broader blade than the needles typical of other pinales, and by their strobiles, whose scales (macrosporophylls) of sterile seeds, as well as their peduncles, swell at maturity and become fleshy to form a large edible drupe (genus Podocarpus).
