Concept information
Preferred term
climate warming
Definition
- Global warming includes both the warming induced by man-made greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting large-scale changes in weather patterns. The main driver of warming is the emission of greenhouse gases, over 90% of which are carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas for energy consumption is the main source of these emissions, with additional contributions from agriculture, deforestation and industrial production. The temperature increase is accelerated or moderated by climate feedbacks, such as the loss of sunlight-reflecting snow and ice cover, increases in water vapour (a greenhouse gas itself) and changes in terrestrial and oceanic carbon sinks.
