Definition
- A biome, also called macroecosystem, biotic area, ecozone or ecoregion (a term whose meaning is often confused with biota), is a set of ecosystems characteristic of a biogeographical area and named after the vegetation and animal species that predominate and are adapted there. It is the expression of the ecological conditions of the place on a regional or continental scale: the climate which induces the soil, both of which in turn induce the ecological conditions to which the plant and animal communities of the biome in question will respond. Terrestrial biomes are described by the science of biogeography. The ecological land classification defines the vocabulary used to assess the size of these areas from the microbiome to the biosphere. Their concept depends on the notions of community, soil, plant and animal interaction. By extension, the term microbiome is used to designate the living space of the microbiota.
