eruption

Definition

  • A volcanic eruption is a geological phenomenon characterized by the emission by a volcano of lava or tephra accompanied by volcanic gases. When a volcanic eruption causes material damage or death to humans or other animal or plant species - which is the majority of cases for terrestrial volcanoes - this phenomenon constitutes, in the short or medium term, a natural disaster with local or global impact, which can disrupt animal and human habits, topography, etc. Recent research shows that volcanic eruptions have a significant impact on global climate, and should be considered as key catalytic phenomena in explaining ecological changes and the historical upheavals of human societies.
