Definition
- Paleovegetation refers to fossil plant remains (pollen, wood fossils) discovered on paleontological sites. Their analysis enables us to reconstruct a local and regional image of these sites. In Europe, according to the Fossilva network, analysis of wood, wood-fossil DNA and fossil pollen databases shows that during the last three ice ages, temperate-zone tree species disappeared from northern zones, retreating southwards or surviving in a few "refuge zones" in northern Europe (north of the Mediterranean) and then re-conquering, "fairly" quickly (at a speed of 0.42 to 1 km/year), the continent during the Holocene warming, 11,000 years before present. One question is whether recolonization took place from Spanish or Italian refuges, or from elsewhere. Palynological and dating data, together with the knowledge of forest geneticists, have enabled us to reconstruct the points of origin and axes of expansion of the lineages that gave rise to contemporary forests.
