Definition
- The Saxonian is a subdivision of the geological time scale, grouping together the Sakmarian, Artinskian and Kungurian. Its stratotype is characterized by Saxonian conglomerates and sandstones. The Saxonian corresponds to the Middle Permian. The term is defined with the Saxon region as typological reference. The Saxonian corresponds mainly to deposits of azoic red sandstone, clay, shale and pudding. This stratotype follows the Autunian, rising to -256 Ma when the Thuringian takes over.
