Heinrich layer  

Definition

  • Heinrich layers are rock mass eroded by the glaciers and dropped to the sea floor as ice rafted debris (abbreviated to "IRD") when the icebergs melted during Heinrich events. Geochemical analyses of the Heinrich layers allow us to estimate their origin and thus to identify which polar cap caused the corresponding Heinrich event. This involves determining the minerals making up the detrital grains and measuring the isotopic abundance of certain elements taken from the Heinrich layers. These analyses revealed that H1, H2, H4 and H5 were mainly caused by icebergs from the Laurentide ice sheet, while H3 and H6 were mainly due to the European ice sheets (Scandinavia, British Isles and Iceland).
