Carixian
Definition
- The Carixian is the lower substage of the Pliensbachian, which is itself a stage of the Lower Jurassic (Lias), succeeding the Sinemurian and preceding the Toarcian. Its age ranges from -190.8 million years (Ma) to around -186 Ma. The term Carixian is the Latinized Carixia form of the name of the market town of Charmouth, on the English Channel coast in the county of Dorset, England. The Carixian is characterized by a major climatic shift to very hot weather, causing a rapid rise in sea level, completely overtaking the very calm lagoon landscape inherited from the Lower Lias, and leading to the continuous flooding of vast coastal areas. Accompanied by major tectonic movements of the expanding continents, this new, highly active marine transgression continued unabated until the end of the Jurassic, forming the basic mass of all our present-day limestone basins. The beginning of the Carixian "Jamesoni" period was characterized by major mudflow episodes, resulting in massive spreadings of gravels torn from the rear coastal massif, which are found sealed like concrete in the first marine sedimentary layers of the period, still sub-lithographic near the coasts. Then, the extreme climate lateritized the soils, bringing in large quantities of iron locally, coloring the sediments a characteristic red of varying intensity. This "Oolitic" sequence becomes more pronounced in the Upper Carixian and continues into the Domerian. The transition to the Lower Domerian "Stokesi" is established at the end of the Carixian by a layer of characteristically anoxic red clay, loaded with "Gryphée Symbium" oysters and other Belemnite rostres.
