Concept information
Preferred term
aridity
Definition
- Aridity is a climatic phenomenon involving low rainfall. In so-called arid or dry regions, rainfall is lower than potential evapotranspiration (PTE). Since aridity is a spatial concept, a region can be described as arid and not a period. There are zonal drylands due to the presence of the descending part of the Hadley cells and non-zonal deserts due to various causes. Aridification is the gradual or abrupt change of climate leading to aridity. (Adapted and translated from: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aridit%C3%A9)
